On the other hand, if one takes, as Silva does in his chapter, the active nature of the soul as its mode of being in the body and that pre-experiential intentionality as being what makes perception possible, then, Augustine’s theory should be understood as being active in accordance with criterion (1). Perceiving external objects is one of the most basic processes in which living beings are engaged. It has historically been taken as the starting point for all knowledge in the sense that all knowledge is either the direct result of perception, or is made accessible to higher cognitive powers by means of perception.
