FI G. 38 Distribution of Globorotalia hirsuta. hatched = surface sediment distribution, black = living plankton distribution. a) sedimentation is of a variable intensity in different areas due to differences in bottom structure and differences in mortality rates, b) during dying and sedimentation on the sea-floor transport over large distances may occur, and c) as decomposition may prevent fossilisation in some areas. In some cases the sediment range is smaller, in some larger than the range of the living species.

These areas with high abundance are somewhat similar to the CARDIAPODA PLACENTOIDES type of distribution (cf. fig. 128). It is clear that one and the same overall distribution can mask differences in the abundance pattern, and thus essential differences are not elucidated. For most plankton species, sampling is too incidental to discriminate properly between such differences shown by reproductive range or area ofhigh abundance, and expatriation areas or areas with low abundance. When enough data are available one should, however, discriminate especially between patterns with and those without strong expatriation tendencies.

The forma zetesios lives in the Tropics at greater depth, as indicated in the map by hatching. In the warmer surface waters between 400N and 30° S the forma planctonis is found. This bathymetric variation shows parallels with the clinal variations in Salpafusiformis and Clio pyramidata, where adaptations to warmer waters are achieved by the development of special forms instead of by going deeper with the colder waters.
