Why? What am I scared of? What is the truth? Start with these questions and then write as long as your pen and your heart will allow. You might be surprised by what you discover about yourself. When I’m stressed, the last thing I want to do is look at the good. It’s tough to try to think positive when things feel like they are crumbling around you. But it makes a difference. When I first started my gratitude journal, my list was very small. But still, at the end of every day, I tried to write down three things I was grateful for.

It’s the internal voice that says, You shouldn’t be resting; you have too much to do. Why are you sitting still? You don’t have time to sit still. You know, you’re wasting the day away. What have you accomplished today? Nothing? Why not? We all battle the voice that tells us we’re simply not doing enough. But battle we must. The voice is lying. You will be far more productive if you take the time to rest, refresh, and restore. And even if you’re not more productive, you will certainly be better company to yourself and those you love.

Finally one warm Saturday afternoon, we scrambled down into the ravine, climbed over tree trunks, and explored our own backyard. It was so fun! Wherever you live, whether in the city or out in the country, when was the last time you walked out the door with no real destination in mind? Go. Explore. You never know what you may find just around the corner. What’s your favorite type of music? Are you a country fan? classical? rap? jazz? What tunes get your foot tapping and your head bobbing? When I was younger, I would kick back and listen to music for hours—not so much anymore.
